Murder at Crufts Dog Show

We all know dog show can get quite competitive, but at this years Crufts dog show in Birmingham, England somebody went to far.

An Irish Setter named Jagger died shortly after he and his owner returned to home to Belgium. Owner Alexandra Lauwers noticed the dog seemed ill so she called the veterinarian to come over.

Before he arrived Jagger had died in her arms, the vet suspected something was amiss so he took the dog back to his clinic and performed an autopsy.

Co-owner Dee Milligan-Bott said, “They found cubes of beef in his stomach that had at least two types of poison inside. Pieces of beef had been stitched together so that the poison didn’t come out.”

“I’ve been doing this for 30-odd years and I think I would have to give up on everything if I believed that someone who shows and breeds dogs would kill a dog. We all do this because we love dogs. If you hate me for being successful, then stick a brick through my window or something. But why would you involve a dog?”

While toxicology tests are being carried out, the vet has informed the Belgian police of the incident, and Milligan-Bott said she will contact West Midlands Police in the UK.

Organizers of the Crufts dog show said that there had never been such an incident in the history of the competition, which goes back over 100 years.

Caroline Kisko, secretary of the Kennel Club, said in a statement, “We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear this terrible news and our heartfelt sympathies go out to Jagger’s owners.”

“We understand that a toxicology report is due next week and that this matter has been reported to the police, we will work with them and help however we can.”

Scottish Terrier, with handler Rebecca Cross
On a brighter note, this years competition was won by a 5 year old Scottish Terrier named Knopa.

Breed in the US and said to be owned by Russians, the dog competes under the name McVan’s To Russia With Love and was shown by Rebecca Cross.
